"Did you see the movie The Rapture, Harriet?"
"I sure did, Millie. And I saw other movies too, like Left Behind, and Taken and those other movies like that."
"What do you think of it, you know, that rapture thing? Do you think it's really going to happen? I mean, do you think things are going to get terrible for all the people not taken up to Heaven with God?"
"I don't know. But I'm not taking any chances. I joined a church right away. Me and my family we go to church all the time and make sure we tithe and everything. I sure don't want to be one of those left behind like in the movies."
"Me too. I joined a church, but me and my family we don't go all the time and we don't give them too much money."
"Well, don't you think that's kind of risky? My pastor says that if we don't go to church regularly and pay our ten percent we are just like those people who don't go to church at all. I mean, like you know, the heathen people who are going to be left behind."
"Really? My pastor says that as long as we said the sinner"s prayer and was baptized that we are sure of going to heaven even if we go back to being the worst sinner there is. He said that even if we stop going to church and don't read the Bible God still has to take us."
"I wish my church believed that. I get a little tired of going to church every week. And I really can't afford to pay tithes what with cigarettes and beer costing so much."
"I know what you mean. But it could be worse. You know Jane don't you? She says her church even says if you smoke you won't go to heaven."
"Well, that's kind of being a religious fanatic. I don't want to be one of those. It's bad enough that our church says we should talk to people about Jesus. But I don't know as how I want to go that far. I would be embarrassed and all."
"It sounds to me like your church is trying to put a big burden on you. After all, we're not looking to be preachers are anything. All we want to do is stay out of that tribulation thing. I've got an idea, Harriet, why don't you come join my church and then you can be sure of going up in that rapture thing without having to do all that extra stuff."
"That's a good idea. Besides, I'd feel better about my son, what with him being a drug addict and homosexual and all. He's already been baptized but he isn't living up to what the church says to do. If we join your church then he won't have to change and I will know he won't be left behind with all those unbelievers."
The movies and books sure are doing what they're intended to do. They're making lots of money, making people scared, and driving people into churches by the droves.
And surely that is what the churches want.
But is that what God wants?
